CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked and second-seeded Oswego State baseball team was upset 10-8 by No. 3 Brockport in the second game of the 2016 SUNYAC Championship, hosted by top-seed Cortland. Oswego – now 30-8 on the year – will face No. 4 Fredonia at 10 a.m. on Saturday in an elimination game. Brockport advances to face Cortland in the winner's bracket following the Lakers against the Blue Devils.
On Friday, Brockport scored the game's first five runs and controlled most of the game until Oswego mounted a comeback with a five-run eighth inning. That stretch pulled the Lakers within two at 10-8 heading into the ninth. Although Oswego shutdown Brockport to get its final at-bat with just the two-run margin, Brockport struck out the side to end the contest.
Oswego did put 12 hits on the board, with five hitters finishing with two hits. Those Lakers were
Wes Randall,
Eric Hamilton,
Myles Kutscher,
John Barnes and
Zach Kollar. E. Hamilton, Barnes and Kollar each tallied two RBI while
Jordan Giller and
Matt Capobianco both had a hit and drove in one runner. One of Kollar's runs batted in came in the fifth inning when he hit a solo homer off the top of the centerfield fence and continued over.
On the mound,
Brian Nolan took the loss in a start to fall to 3-2 on the year. The freshman went 3.2 innings, allowing five runs, only three of which were earned.
Bobby Zywicki threw 3.0 innings of relief, surrendering four runs with just two being charged as earned. Senior
Miles Kelly wrapped the final 2.1 innings for Oswego, giving up just three hits and a run.
