BLOOMINGTON, Minn. –
Brian Sortino – the newly-selected National Association of Basketball Coaches First Team All-American – continues to receive recognition from several entities in the wake of the conclusion of the 2016-17 season.
In the most recent releases, Sortino was named a Second Team All-American by DIII News. He also earned D3hoops.com Third Team honors. He was one of just 25 players to be acknowledged for national status.
The Fairport, N.Y. native led the Lakers to their best regular-season finish in the past five years, collecting a 19-6 (.760) record, including going 15-3 in the conference. Oswego's finish allowed it to host the State University of New York Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship.
During the year-end tournament, Sortino shined, scoring 75 points combined in wins over Buffalo State and Oneonta. In the 84-83 overtime win versus the Bengals, he played all 45 minutes, tallying 48 points on 52 (13-for-25) percent shooting from the field and 17-of-19 (89.5%) shooting from the charity stripe. The senior guard returned the next day – in the title contest – and scored 27 points in the 75-70 win to lead the Lakers to their second league crown during his tenure.
Throughout his spectacular career, Sortino scored 1,991 points to average 19.0 points per game, subsequently helping Oswego win 79 games. He filled the stat sheet, dishing 3.4 assists, collecting 2.9 rebounds per game and 1.0 steals during his tenure.
