Herlihey Named AHCA Second Team All-American

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Mitch Herlihey of the Oswego State men's ice hockey team has been named to the American Hockey Coach Association (AHCA) All-America Second Team. Herlihey, who was named State University of New York Athletic Conference's (SUNYAC) Herb Hammond Player of the Year and named to the All-Conference First Team, becomes the 29th player in program history to receive All-America honors.

The senior captain for the Lakers scored 30 points this season -- a career high -- on 13 goals and 17 assists. A model of consistency, he scored a point in 18 of Oswego's 25 games, with nine of those being multi-point efforts. He was a key member of Oswego's first line that generated 36 of the team's 90 goals. Herlihey also led the team in first goals, as he scored the opening goal for the Lakers five times throughout the year.

Known for his clutch play, Herlihey dominated in crucial games for the Lakers this year. He scored seven points in the six games Oswego played against regionally ranked teams. These were highlighted by a game-tying goal with 29 seconds left against UCHC regular-season and postseason champion Utica College on Jan. 20. On Feb. 9, he scored two first-period goals against Geneseo, which helped Oswego secure the SUNYAC regular season crown for the second straight year.

The Ottawa, Ont. native is also seen as one of the top defensive forwards in the country as well. He played significant time on the Lakers' penalty-kill unit that was 11th in the nation, successful on over 87-percent of its attempts. Herlihey also blocked 12 shots on the year, aiding Oswego's defense that allowed just 1.73 goals per game, ranking third in all of Division III.
