Lakers in the Community - 2012-13

A big component of being a student-athlete at Oswego State is serving the local community!  Each year the athletic teams participate in numerous community service projects and fundraising efforts.

The Lakers participated in 43 events that helped 19 different organizations and raised over $155,000 over the course of 2012-13.

Dynegy/Laker Men's Ice Hockey for Oswego County Hospice (6/7/13)- It was announced that, once again, Dynegy Energy, along with head coach Ed Gosek, presented a donation to Oswego County Hospice based on the Laker men’s ice hockey power play success this past winter.

Special Olympics - Basketball & Swimming (5/4/13)- Held at Laker Hall for the first time in years, Special Olympics athletes competed in basketball and aquatics skills assisted by volunteers from five Laker squads - women's tennics, women's lacrosse, men's basketball and men's and women's swimming and diving.

Relay for Life (4/27/13)- Participating in a 12-hour walk-a-thon to raise money for the American Cancer Society, members of the Laker women's tennis and volleyball teams organized their own teams and helped raise more than $400 between them. Overall, this year's event raised more than $38,700.
 
2013 MoveAlong Wheelchair Basketball
MoveAlong's "Shoot for the Stars" (4/27/13)- This annual event featured a wheelchair basketball tournament with members of the men's ice hockey and women's basketball teams among the competitors. Women's basketball student-athletes not competing volunteered as referees. More than $20,000 was raised for MoveAlong, Inc. at the event.

The Manor at Seneca Hill Game Night (4/9/13)- Six members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council played bingo and other games with the residents at a local nursing home along with helping serve dinner.

Community Benefit Dinner (3/30/13)- A community benefit dinner for an ill local girl included members of the men's ice hockey team volunteering their time to serve cake and visit with the girl. 



 
Vadala St. Baldrick's
St. Baldrick's Night in Oswego County (3/27/13)- The seventh annual St. Baldrick's event set a new record with more than 200 shavess and nearly $93,000 raised. Members of the men's tennis, men's ice hockey, men's soccer, men's lacrosse teams and a women's cross country/track & field athlete were among the shavees. Members of the women's ice hockey team helped as volunteers at the event.

St. Baldrick's Bunco Night (3/12/13)- Members of the women's tennis team helped with registration, door prizes and raffles at a night of fun and fundraising for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. More than 100 community members participated and helped raise $3,000.

St. Baldrick's Awareness Night (2/19 and 2/23/13)- Information tables about the annual St. Baldrick's fundraiser were set up at the SUNYAC quarterfinal men's and women's basketball and semifinal men's ice hockey games. Bracelets and buttons were sold at the basketball games, raising approximately $175. "Chuck-a-puck" proceeds along with button and bracelet sales raised more than $600 at the men's ice hockey game, where is was also announced that five Lakers had registered as "shavees."

Play4Kay Night (2/12/13)-More than $250 was collected at the men’s and women’s basketball teams’ annual Play4Kay event, with all proceeds going to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Both men’s and women’s teams wore pink Play4Kay T-shirts through pre-game warm-ups to help the “initiative that allows a nation of coaches to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.”

Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night (2/8/13)-Complimentary tickets were available for all faculty and staff for the women’s ice hockey’s final regular-season evening game of the season.

Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night (2/5/13)-Complimentary tickets were available for all faculty and staff for the men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader.
 
“Pink the Rink” (1/26/13 & 1/27/13)-Fans of women’s ice hockey were asked to wear pink to show support for cancer awareness.  A custom pink Laker ice hockey jersey was auctioned off, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
 
Make-A-Wish Night (1/26/13)-Surprise presentation of a local girl’s Make-A-Wish gift was announced between periods at a Laker men’s ice hockey game.  The young boy who raised the money was on the ice to share in the presentation.
 
Military Appreciation Night (1/26/13)-Information tables were at the men’s and women’s basketball games about the College’s programs for military veterans were available and a public thank you went out to all US veterans.
 
Military Appreciation Night / MoveAlong Night (1/25/13)-Information about SUNY Oswego’s programs for military veterans were available, a public recognition for all military veterans, and a MoveAlong, Inc. sled hockey demonstration between periods highlighted this special men’s ice hockey game.  

Pizza and Bowling Party (1/24/13)-Women’s ice hockey team members joined Oswego Minor Hockey Association girls’ U-8 and U-10 teams for an evening of bowling, food, and friendship.
 
Youth Hockey Night (1/12/13)-Players and coaches from the Oswego Minor Hockey Association were given complimentary admission to the men’s ice hockey game.
 
Youth Basketball Night (1/11/13)-Area youth basketball players were guests of honor at the men’s and women’s basketball games.
 
Annual “Skate with the Lakers” (12/9/12)-College students as well as members of the community were invited to skate with members of both hockey teams – and Santa Claus – in a fundraiser for the United Way.  A record turnout resulted in more than $800 being donated to the United Way of Greater Oswego County.
 
United Way Night (12/7/12 & 12/8/12)-Collections of both food and toys were made at the women’s ice hockey game on Friday night and again at the men’s ice hockey game on Saturday night.
 
United Way Toy Drive (11/30/12 & 12/1/12)-Fans were asked to make donations of toys for the Holidays at both men’s and women’s basketball games.
 
United Way Food Drive (11/16/12 and 11/17/12)-Collections for the United Way’s food pantry ware made at the Max Ziel Invitational Basketball Tournament and at the weekend’s men’s ice hockey games.

Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night (11/16/12)-Members of the College’s faculty and staff were given complimentary tickets to the men’s ice hockey game as the Laker student-athletes thanked them for their support in the classroom and on game day.
 
United Way Stone Soup Luncheon (11/15/12) Several women’s ice hockey team members and the coaching staff assisted with this annual United Way event.  Laker athletes helped prepare and serve lunch for the area’s homeless.
 
Annual Ted Mullin Memorial “Hour of Power” (11/13/12) Members of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving team completed their annual “Leave it in the pool” Hour of Power workout in honor of former Carleton swimmer Ted Mullin, who passed away in 2006.
 
Annual SUNYAC Leaf-raking project (11/4/12)- Approximately 350 of Oswego State’s student-athletes helped rake yards of Oswego’s senior citizens as part of a SUNYAC-wide community service initiative.  More than 50 yards were raked before noon.

Special Olympics - Bowling (10/27/12)- More than 30 members of the baseball and softball teams assisted bowlers throughout their competition at Fulton's Lakeview Lanes, and also lending plenty of vocal support and encouragement.

Annual Green/Gold/Pink Coaches vs. Cancer Game (10/13/12)- The Laker men's lacrosse team collected donations to go towards the American Cancer Society and Coaches vs. Cancer.

Dig Pink (10/10/12)- The Oswego State volleyball team helped raise money and awareness for the Side-Out Foundation, which is dedicated to breast cancer research. Funds were raised through raffles, door prizes, donations, and giveaways.

Youth Basketball Clinic (10/7/12)- The Laker men's basketball team and coaching staff offered a free basketball clinic for about 45 boys and girls in Grades 1-7.

Pumpkin Run 5K (10/6/12)- The Oswego State softball team participated in a campus-wide 5K run/walk to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure.

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Event (9/29/12)- The Laker women's ice hockey team helped a pair of local chiropractors promote early detection screenings for ovarian cancer.

BucFest (9/29/12)- Members of the men's ice hockey team operated games, sold tickets, and supervised children at the Oswego City School District's annual event.

Fulton/Oswego Chamber of Commerce (9/28/12)- The Oswego State men's ice hockey team helped set up tents, tables, and chairs in East Park for the annual Chamber of Commerce Pumpkin Fest.

Sarah's Walk/PDSA 5K Run (9/22/12)- In the race within a race, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated the men's lacrosse, the women's ice hockey, and an incomplete women's basketball team in a head-to-head cross country race. More than 100 student-athletes participated in this annual event at Hannibal High School, helping raise more than $1,700 for the Platelet Disorder Support Association.

Special Olympics - Soccer (9/15/12) - Approximately 30 members of the women's soccer and baseball teams helped athletes compete in four different soccer skills competitions. Laker athletes coached, officiated, and encouraged the Special Olympics athletes. Both athletic groups had lunch together and were on hand for awards that were given out to the Special Olympics athletes .

Oswego Minor Hockey Association- (September 2012) - Members of the men's ice hockey team helped the local youth hockey organization all month with skills, drills, and coaching. 

Oswego City School District Nature Trail Repairs - (9/1/12) - Labor Day weekend kicked off with members of the Oswego State wrestling team clearing trails, putting down wood chips, and generally improving the condition of the Oswego City School District’s Nature Trail at the Oswego Middle School.
