Oswego, N.Y. -- Alex Botten of the men's ice hockey team has been named the Oswego State Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 19, 2014.
In a 2-1 week for the Lakers, Botten contributed at least one point in each of the contests.
The week started with a 9-3 triumph over Salve Regina at home. Botten was able to score the team's second goal at 17:08 of the first period. His goal broke a 1-1 tie and came on passes from Kenny Neil and Mike Wills. Botten added a second point in the contest with an assist on Matt Galati's goal at 7:25 of the third period.
Next, Oswego extended its win-streak to five with a 3-0 victory over Nazareth College on Friday night in the Campus Center. Once again Botten assisted on a Galati goal, this time in the second period at 10:48 to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. The freshman added another point with an assist to Mike Montagna on the team's final goal of the night.
Although Oswego was unable to continue its win streak on Saturday with a 3-2 loss to Elmira College on the road, Botten still found his way into the box score. The Botten-to-Galati connection was at it again as the two took advantage of a power-play in the third period for the Lakers' first goal in a comeback effort. Oswego scored again just 46 seconds later but could not find the back of the net a third time to try and force extra time.
Oswego will return to action at 7 p.m. on Friday when it continues its road trip at Fredonia.
