Oswego, N.Y. – Melissa Seamont of the women’s ice hockey team has been named the Oswego State Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 16, 2014.
Seamont led the Lakers with four goals as they swept Utica College in two games over the weekend.
The senior started the weekend off impressively on Saturday by scoring the only two goals for to power the Lakers over the Pioneers 2-1. Seamont buried the first goal of game shorthanded at 11:17 of the first period to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. The goal was assisted by classmate Olivia Boersen.
It seemed to be a pattern for Seamont after the first intermission when she scored her second shorthanded goal of the day, unassisted, at 4:09 in the second. The goal came less than a minute into the Pioneers’ power-play.
Seamont was right back at it again on Sunday afternoon with another two goals to defeat Utica College again, 2-1. Trailing 1-0 early in the first period, the senior found her way to the net to tie it up 1-1 at 14:30. Boersen assisted on the goal along with fellow senior Emma Smetaniuk.
The three teamed up again for the game-winner on a Laker power-play at 9:33 in the third period. Boersen and Smetaniuk were able to find Seamont for her fourth goal of the weekend.
The North Bay native currently leads the Lakers in goals scored with 10 and has six assists on the season. Her point total ranks second on the team behind only Boersen.
The Lakers have an important weekend ahead as they take on Plattsburgh for their last weekend of the regular season. They will take on the No. 1 Cardinals at 7p.m. on Friday then again for Senior Day at 3p.m. on Saturday.
