OSWEGO, N.Y. – Ryan Jelen of the men’s lacrosse team has been named the Oswego State Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 20, 2016.
In a 1-1 week for the Lakers, Jelen was tied for the team-high in goals each game, pacing the squad with four goals in the pair of contests.
On Wednesday, the sophomore scored both of Oswego’s second-quarter goals in a 7-4 victory over Hartwick College at Laker Turf Stadium. His first came at 6:35 from Jarrod Wilkom followed by an unassisted tally with 41 seconds left in the half. The pair of goals gave Oswego a 3-0 advantage on the Hawks heading into the locker rooms.
Oswego then hosted St. John Fisher College on Saturday, which proved to be a thrilling tilt that ended with a Fisher goal in the final minute, allowing the Cardinals to steal a 10-9 triumph. Twice in the game, Jelen spurred Laker comebacks. Trailing 4-2 midway through the second quarter, Jelen notched an unassisted goal to cut the Fisher lead to just one. This gave way to Oswego knotting the score at 5-5 heading into halftime.
Jelen was at it again early in the final period, as Oswego again faced a two-goal deficit at 9-7 with just over 10 minutes to play. The Nauet, N.Y. native halted a three-goal Cardinal run with another unassisted score to make it 9-8 at 10:02. Luke Krizman paired with Mark Frega to score the equalizer just 33 seconds later, setting up the tight battle down the stretch.
Oswego will return to action at Alfred University when the Lakers faceoff with the Saxons at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
