OSWEGO, N.Y. – Esther Gabriel of the women’s lacrosse team has been named the Oswego State Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending May 1, 2016.
Gabriel was Oswego’s top goal-scorer over the two game stretch, notching five in each contest. The senior has scored 44 goals on the season (3.14-per-game), ranking her sixth in the SUNYAC. The most important of the week’s goals came with just over seven minutes remaining in the game against #9 Brockport when she put the Lakers up 12-11.
The Lancaster, N.Y. native also helped in other ways during the squads 2-0 week. She controlled 13 draws, scooped up 4 ground balls, and caused a turnover. She also picked up an assist to add to her five goals on Wednesday against Potsdam on the team’s way to a 19-8 victory.
Gabriel’s 44 goals are the most of her four year career, and give her the team lead in goals. She also leads the squad in draw controls (65), and ranks second in ground balls (33) behind goalie Angela Ponto.
The women’s lacrosse team will host SUNYAC playoff action on Tuesday when it hosts Potsdam at 4 p.m. at Laker Turf Stadium.
