Brian Sortino of the men’s basketball team was named the Oswego State Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 26.
In Friday’s 84-83 overtime thriller against Buffalo State, the point guard scored 48 points, one off of the school record set in 1959 and a career-high, to secure the team’s spot in the SUNYAC Championship Final. He filled the rest of the stat sheet by grabbing nine boards and recording six assists. From the field, the senior shot 13-for-25 while hitting 5-of-7 shots from behind the arc. He also made a season-high 17-of-19 free throw attempts.
Tied at 80-80 with 35 seconds left in the game, Sortino drove to the basket and scored a layup to give the Lakers a two point lead. On the next possession, after a Buffalo State three-point play, Sortino was being double-teamed near mid-court when he found teammate Jamir Ferebee under the basket for the game-winning layup.
During Saturday’s 75-70 win against Oneonta in the SUNYAC Championship title game, the Fairport N.Y. native scored a game-high 27 points going 10-of-21 from the field and 4-of-9 from long range. He dished out five assists and cleared four boards on the evening as well.
Men’s basketball will continue its postseason run as will take on the field of 64 in the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament. The selection for the Lakers first game will take place on Monday at 12:30 p.m.
