OSWEGO, N.Y. - Josh Zizek of the men’s ice hockey team has been named the Oswego State Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending on Oct. 29. Zizek’s four points over the weekend led Oswego in production as the Lakers exit their opening weekend with an even 1-1 record.

Saturday evening’s “Teal Game” for Ovarian Cancer Awareness featured the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College coming into town slated as Oswego’s first regular season contest of the year. Elmira took a 2-0 lead before Zizek would strike, first off a pass from Joey Scorpio 15:37 into the first period then again at 17:10 also from Scorpio and Max Novick.

Oswego took the lead in the third period, when Zizek sparked a power-play tally garnering the secondary assist on David Ferreira’s go-ahead goal 5:28 into the final period. The sophomore added to the Laker lead when David Ferreira set up Max Novick for a shot from the point which Zizek redirected into the cage giving the Lakers a 4-2 lead with 8:38 left in the contest, good for his first collegiate hat-trick. Zizek’s efficient three goals on four shots along with an assist propelled the Lakers to their first victory of the 2017-18 campaign.

The St. Catherine’s native and the Lakers play next at 7 p.m. on Nov. 3 against the 0-2 Cortland Red Dragons in their first SUNYAC regular-season matchup of the year.
