OSWEGO, N.Y. - Rebecca Vilchez of the softball team has been named the Oswego State Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending on April 1. Starting game one of Wednesday’s doubleheader against Hamilton College, Vilchez earned her fifth win of the year. Playing in their home-opening doubleheader against Cortland on Saturday, Vilchez contributed both from the mound and the batter’s box to split the series against the Red Dragons.
Stepping into the batter’s box during the fifth inning of game one with the bases loaded against Hamilton on Wednesday, Vilchez laced a single back up the middle scoring a run on the way to a 3-5 day at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored.
Later in the week against Cortland, Vilchez cruised through seven innings in game one allowing only a single run and not issuing a walk. In addition to striking out five, the sophomore slotted an RBI double to right field in the sixth inning tying the game in clutch fashion. In the same inning, Vilchez made the difference coming home to score on a passed ball, grabbing the lead for the Lakers and ultimately the first program win against Cortland since March 29, 2013.
During the second game of the doubleheader, Vilchez drove home four runs to lead the Lakers in offensive production. Two runs of which coming off a double down the line by Vilchez in the fifth inning scoring teammates Katherine Brown and Sarah McCullough.
The Franklin Square, N.Y. native and Oswego play their next game at 3 p.m. on Wednesday against Utica College in Oswego, N.Y.
