OSWEGO, N.Y. - Carly Vreugde of the track and field team has been named the Oswego State Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending on May 6. This is the sophomore’s first award in this category during the spring semester and she becomes the third track and field athlete to win the honor this year, joining teammates Tylea McCarthy-Walker and Sarah Yensan.
Vreugde was a key component in the team finishing in sixth place and scoring 50 points at this weekend’s SUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The result and team points were both program bests since at least the 2006 season.
The Lake George, N.Y. native set a new school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.48 seconds, breaking the previous record of Marissa Periseau set in 2015. In qualifying on Friday, Vreugde set a new school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.62 seconds. She eclipsed the record set by Deb Richards in the 2004 season.
Vreugde’s top-three result in the 400-meter event earned her All-Conference accolades from the SUNYAC. This is her second time earning All-Conference, her last one as a freshman in the indoor season for the 4x400 meter relay.
Ten Lakers, including Vreugde, are back in action on Wednesday and Thursday for the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships in Brockport, N.Y.
