OSWEGO, N.Y. - JJ Alaniz - of the men's swimming and diving team - was named Oswego State Male Athlete of the week for the week ending Feb. 24.
The sophomore won the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.98) at the SUNYAC Championship, earning him first team all-conference. His efforts propelled Oswego to finish second at the championships.
The San Antonio, Texas native also received four second team all-conference honors for his performances in record breaking relays for the squad.
Alaniz and the Lakers were able to shatter school records in the 800-yard freestyle (6:58.37, a mark that stood for 12 years) and 200-yard freestyle (1:24.85). He also helped set new school records in the 200-yard medley relay (1:34.66) and 400-yard freestyle (3:05.10).
Eclipsing the school record in the 400-yard freestyle was twofold; it broke a 34 year-old record, while also vaulting Oswego past Cortland into second place on the final day, a spot they would not relinquish.
