Senior wrestler Derrick Smith (Mexico) finished second at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference championships on Saturday, Feb. 21. Smith was awarded an at-large selection to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on March 6-7 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This will be his third trip to the NCAA Championships. Smith’s overall record this season is 30-7 and he is currently ranked 7th in the nation at 141 pounds by the NWCA ranking committee.

In his first match this weekend, Smith defeated Josh Bellinger of SUNY Brockport, 4-3. He went on to defeat John Paxos of Ithaca College, who is ranked 8th in the country, in double overtime by a score of 3-2. He lost in the finals to 5th ranked Luke Baum of RIT, 11-3.

Smith, an adolescent education major, is the son of Tom and Debra Smith of Mexico.
