OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Athletics Department has released their November Athletes of The Month sponsored by Oswego Health this afternoon. Freshman Goaltender Cal Schell of the Men’s Ice Hockey team and Junior Guard Karleigh Leo of the Women’s Basketball team have been selected for their outstanding achievements in the month of November.

The Burlington Ontario native has shown his skills to become a force in the SUNYAC between the pipes in the month of November.

At the end of the month, Schell had done something never done before in the rich history of the Oswego State Lakers Men’s Ice Hockey program. Schell won the first SIX games of his career.

Starting his career with one of the biggest weekends of the season for the Lakers in Whiteout, Schell racked up 28 saves in the contest, coming away with his first career victory. The Burlington, Ontario native didn’t stop there as he swept the whiteout weekend, earning the victory after two periods of play, recording nine saves in the contest. In their third conference game of the season, the Lakers took on the Red Dragons, defeating the SUNYAC foe by a score of 5-4, Schell recorded 23 saves in the victory.

On November 18th, the freshman goaltender had a tall task ahead of him as they took on the #3 Geneseo Knights, a team the Lakers had not defeated in over four seasons. In the full 60 minutes of play, Schell recorded 40 saves, earned a save percentage of .930 and came away with the victory.

The next day, Schell showed his endurance, earning his fifth win of the season against the Golden Eagles of Brockport. In 59:40 minutes played, the freshman recorded 16 saves, had a goals against average of 1.01 and a save percentage of .941. This victory moved Schell’s record to 5-0 on the season, at the time the best record in the conference.

As Thanksgiving came around, the Lakers took part in the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational. Oswego took on the Wilkes University Colonels and took the victory by a score of 5-1. Schell recorded 34 saves in the contest to bring his record to 6-0, breaking the Oswego State record for consecutive wins for a goaltender to start a career.
