Wallace (Wally) Yelverton established three school throwing records that still stand today in the shot put in indoor and outdoor track and field and the 35-pound weight throw. He solidified himself as one of the greatest throwers in Oswego State history by winning four SUNYAC indoor and outdoor shot put titles and four New York State Track and Field shot put titles in 1976 and 1977, as well as the 1977 New York State weight throw title. Yelverton went on to earn All-America status twice after recording fourth- and seventh-place finishes in the shot put at the NCAA Championships in 1977 and 1976, respectively.
Professionally, Yelverton served as president of the Southern Tier Technology Education Association and was recognized as the 1990 STTEA Regional Teacher of the Year during his time as a teacher at Union-Endicott High School. He has also been a curriculum developer and trainer for several technology education programs over the years for the New York State Education Department.
Yelverton graduated with a bachelor of science degree in industrial arts education from SUNY Oswego in 1977, and earned graduate credits from Binghamton University. He is also a member of the Maine-Endwell Athletic Hall of Fame and a member of the Maine-Endwell Football Golden 50 squad.
