Game Recap: Softball |

Lyman's Six Hits & Five RBI Lead Lakers Past Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team defeated Potsdam in a twin bill sweep – 2-1 and 7-4 – on Saturday afternoon. Oswego improves to 9-13 and 5-3 in league play, while Potsdam falls to 3-16 and 0-12 in the SUNYAC.

Game One: Oswego 2, Potsdam 1

Oswego and Potsdam battled throughout this contest, which was characterized by strong pitching and few runs. The Lakers plated a pair of runs in the third inning and that was all they would need to claim victory on the road.

Rebecca Vilchez continued her impressive freshman campaign, earning her fifth win of the season with a complete-game seven innings. She allowed just one earned run on five hits and eight strikeouts, while inducing 10 groundouts and three flyouts.

During the top of the third inning, Ashley Lyman collected one of her three hits and plated Vilchez. Meanwhile prior to Lyman's single, Joelle Nesci and Erin Sweeney both collected base-knocks. Jessica Roe followed this by reaching on an error and subsequently helped a run score.

Also adding hits on the day were Gabriella Vertuccio and Sarah McCullough. Roe notched a pair of her own as part of the team's 10 base hits.

Game Two: Oswego 7, Potsdam 4

Lyman continued to dominate Potsdam pitching during the backend of the doubleheader. The senior collected three hits, none more important than the three-run bomb she crushed in the top of the seventh inning, eventually propelling her team to the victory.

The Lockport, N.Y. native started off the contest by having a part in the scoring of the game's first two runs, which handed Oswego a 2-0 lead. In the third, Vertuccio slapped a double into the left-center field gap, scoring Roe and increasing the advantage to 3-1.

Following three unanswered runs by the Bears that gave Potsdam a 4-3 lead, Lyman lent another hand. She seemingly could not miss the ball as she was able to get the ball through the center of the infield to tie the contest – in the fifth – and notch her fourth RBI of the game.

Sweeney also continued her hot hitting in the second game with a pair of hits and runs scored. Vilchez and Roe also tallied a hit apiece.

The latter started on the mound, surrendering two earned on seven hits over the course of four innings pitched. Vilchez relieved her, tossing the final three frames. She did not allow a runner to score and only allowed two hits.

Oswego will return to the diamond for a nonconference doubleheader versus Hamilton College at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
