GENESEO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team suffered a tough sweep at the hands of Geneseo on Friday afternoon at the Knights' Vic Raschi Field. Oswego falls to 13-16 on the year and 9-7 in the conference while the Knights improve to 20-14, 8-8. With its 9-7 league mark, Oswego is in a four-way tie with Buffalo State, New Paltz and Oneonta for third place heading into the final day of the conference schedule.
GENESEO 9, OSWEGO 2:
Oswego opened the scoring with a
Gabriella Vertuccio single to center field to drive in
Erin Sweeney in the top of the first. Geneseo quickly responded with three in the bottom of the frame before the Lakers cut the deficit to one. In the top of the second, Sweeney did the driving in, plating
Sarah McCullough with a single to right to slash the Knights lead to 3-2. Geneseo would add a run in the fourth, put the game away with four in the fifth and cap its scoring with another in the sixth.
McCullough led the way for Oswego at the plate with a pair of hits and a run scored. Sweeney, Vertuccio,
Rebecca Vilchez,
Ashley Lyman,
Jessica Roe,
Joelle Nesci and
Katie Heselden each finished with a hit. Lyman and one of McCullough's hits went for doubles.
Vilchez took the loss in the circle with 6.0 innings of work, allowing nine runs on 12 hits.
GENESEO 4, OSWEGO 0:
The Lakers were able to push anyone across in the nightcap, as McCullough again went 2-for-3 at the dish. Sweeney and Roe each had singles to help account for Oswego's four base knocks in the tilt.
On the rubber, Vilchez earned the defeat despite only surrendering two earned runs on five hits. The freshman now holds a 9-8 record on the year.
Oswego will close the regular season with a doubleheader at Brockport starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday. The conference games on Saturday will determine the final five seeds for the six-team SUNYAC Championship that will take place May 4-7 at No. 1 Cortland.
