Lakers Beat ECSU in Extras, But Fall to Arcadia

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Oswego State softball team split its two Thursday contests on the second-to-last day of the Sunkissed Games. First, the Lakers downed Eastern Connecticut State University, 8-7, in an extra-inning thriller. The Lakers were unable to top Arcadia though, falling 9-4.

In the first inning of game one, Sarah McCullough singled up the middle to score leadoff batter Erin Sweeney, giving the Lakers an early lead. When the Warriors tied it in the bottom half of the inning though, the Lakers came back with a vengeance. Gabriella Vertuccio started things off with a solo homer to give Oswego the lead once again. Then, the Lakers capitalized on walks and an error by the Warriors to put up three more runs on the scoreboard.

Oswego's offense was quiet the next few innings, but Vertuccio extended the lead in the sixth. The senior knocked in Sarah McCullough and Jessica McCarthy with a single to right field. Vertuccio finished the contest with a game-high three RBI.

After the Warriors tied the game in the seventh, forcing extras, Oswego went ahead in the eighth. Angela Frampton smacked a single to left field to give the Lakers a one-run lead, and it was all that they would need. Rebecca Vilchez, who came in in the seventh inning in relief of Frampton, made quick work of the Warrior batters in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory for Oswego.

In game two, the Lakers put up all four of their runs in the fifth inning. First, Vilchez knocked in Sweeney with a single. The sophomore was a force to be reckoned with for the Lakers, going 3-for-4 in each of Oswego's games on Thursday. Later in the inning, Frampton sent a bomb over the fence to tack on three more runs for the Lakers.

The Lakers wrap up action at the Sunkissed Games on Friday afternoon. First, Oswego faces The College of Wooster at 1:30 p.m., followed by Marietta College at 3:45 p.m.
