OSWEGO, N.Y. – Junior Rebecca Vilchez hit a third-inning grand slam in the first game of a midweek doubleheader to propel the Lakers to a 10-2, five-inning victory over Rochester Institute of Technology.  Freshmen Brianna Harrington and Jessica Annello combined to shutout the Tigers 4-0 in the second game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • RIT took an early 2-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first and third innings.
  • The Lakers grabbed the momentum in the bottom of the third inning when they loaded the bases. Singles by Leah Czerwinski and Madelana Wrubel sandwiched an Erin Sweeney sacrifice bunt where she reached due to an error.
  • Emily Knowlden delivered an RBI-single to right field and in the next at-bat Angela Frampton hammered a double to right to score two and put Oswego up 3-2 without any outs in the inning.
  • A walk by Harrington loaded the bases again and Vilchez delivered a grand slam to left field to make it 7-2. The four-bagger chased the RIT's starting pitcher from the game.
  • The Lakers added two more runs in the fourth inning when Knowlden reached on an error and Frampton singled.  Harrington doubled to right field to plate both baserunners.
  • Oswego ended the game in the bottom of the fifth when Czerwinski singled, stole second and advanced to third when Sweeney reached on an error.  Wrubel secured the mercy rule with an eight-run advantage as her sacrifice fly plated Czerwinski.
  • Vilchez (1-4) earned her first win of the season by going four innings, surrendering zero earned runs and holding RIT to just four hits.  Frampton pitched a scoreless fifth inning to allow the Lakers to finish the game.

Game 2
  • The Tigers loaded the bases with two outs to start the second game, but Harrington was able to induce a flyout to keep the opponents off the scoreboard.
  • Sweeney doubled to lead off the first for the Lakers and Wrubel singled to bring her in to give Oswego an early lead.
  • Knowlden walked and Vilchez singled to load the bases for first baseman Taylor DuBois, who delivered a single to right center to make it 2-0.
  • A Sarah McCullough fielder's choice would plate Knowlden for the third Laker run, with the centerfielder swiping second to put runners on second and third.
  • Senior Claire Hewitt's sacrifice fly would make it a 4-0 lead for the Lakers after the first inning.
  • Harrington (3-1) spread five hits over six innings of work to earn the victory and Annello struck out two batters out of three faced to slam the door on any comeback attempt by RIT.
  • Sweeney and Hewitt each had two hits to lead the Lakers, with Hewitt adding a steal to her stat sheet.
