Oswego Closes SUNYAC Run with Loss to Top Seed

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The fifth-seeded Oswego State softball team's run through the 2019 SUNYAC Championship came to a close with a loss to No. 1 Cortland on Saturday morning. With the loss, the Lakers finish the tournament in third, the program's best finish since the SUNYAC began hosting a softball postseason championship in 1984. Oswego's previous best SUNYAC postseason showing was fourth on two occasions, both coming in the last decade (2013, 2017). Following the tournament, Brianna Harrington was named to the SUNYAC All-Championship Team.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Cortland 7, Oswego 0
  • Location: Dragon Field – Cortland, N.Y.
  • Records: Cortland 27-14  |   Oswego 19-21
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Oswego's best opportunity to score came in the top of the fourth inning – trailing just 2-0 – with two-hitter Emily Knowlden leading off. The senior drilled a ball to right field and slid into second just before the through for a double.
  • The Lakers elected to increase their speed on the base paths, pinch-running Leah Czerwinski for Knowlden at second base. A pop out followed by a pair of ground outs ended the Oswego fourth-inning threat.
  • In the Lakers' final at-bat, pinch-hitter Carly Lawless hit a deep drive to left but the fielder stole a base knock as she collided with the fence simultaneously while making the catch. Senior classmate Claire Hewitt also pinch-hit in the seventh, slapping a two-out single past the pitcher and through the middle infield. A ground out in the next at-bat closed the game.
  • Knowlden finished the day 1-for-2 with a walk.
  • On the rubber for Oswego, Harrington tossed 5.1 innings in a loss, falling to 8-3 on the year. The freshman dispersed of eight hits, surrendering just one earned run. Angela Frampton threw the other two-thirds of an inning for the Lakers.
WHAT'S NEXT

Oswego's season comes to an end with a 19-21 overall mark and an 11-7 record in the conference. The Lakers will return 14 players for their 2020 campaign.
