Czerwinski Leads Lakers to Split with Cortland

OSWEGO, N.Y.
– The Oswego State softball team went toe-to-toe with perennial SUNYAC power Cortland on Tuesday afternoon at the Laker Softball Field.  Oswego hung tough in an opening game 5-2 setback before storming past the Red Dragons in the nightcap, 8-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Cortland raced out to a 5-1 lead through the top of the second with Zoe Mennig tripling home Higgins for the Oswego run.
  • After a Red Dragon outburst in the second, Oswego scored six runs, all with two outs.
  • With Hoeflich and Smith aboard, Wrubel and Leah Czerwinski singled to put runs on the board.
  • Higgins knocked a pair in before Mennig walked to reload the bases for senior Taylor DuBois.
  • DuBois smacked a shot down the left field line for another two RBI.
  • Singles by Aleah Yaizzo and Samantha Morgan would make it 7-5 for the Lakers.
  • Hoeflich would keep the Red Dragons in check with four innings of scoreless ball.
  • DuBois would add an insurance run with an RBI-single to plate Czerwinski in the sixth.
  • In the seventh, Cortland would homer to lead off the inning and Higgins would take over on the mound.
  • With two outs, Cortland put together a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases.
  • Higgins would get the flyout to Morgan in right for the save, her second of the season.
  • Hoeflich (5-4) earned the win with four and two-thirds of an inning of one-run ball with four strikeouts.
  • Czerwinski led Oswego, going 3-for-4 from the dish, scoring two runs and knocking one in.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Lakers are off to Fredonia on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. conference doubleheader with the Blue Devils.
