OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego State Softball team faced off against Houghton this afternoon in a double header matchup. The Lakers fell in game one after a late inning rally by the Highlanders. After getting through three innings in the second game, officials decided to call the game due to the darkness.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lakers found themselves down early in the ball game, surrendering four runs in the top of the first inning.

Oswego bounced back strong, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Fiona Higgins got the Lakers on the board first with a single to right field, recording two RBI's. Krista Souders and Madison Hoeflich were brought home by Higgins.

Souders hit a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the second which brought in Ellie Mahoney, and the Lakers would trail by one.

In the bottom of the third, Mahoney would reach first on an error by the infield, advancing to second base. Mahoney was credited with an RBI as Samantha Morgan reached home and tied the game at four.

Houghton ended their scoring drought in the top of the fourth, adding two more runs to give them a 6-4 lead.

A single by Morgan in the bottom of the fourth cut the Highlanders lead to one, with Hoeflich scoring another run on the afternoon.

Christina Kania gave the Lakers their first and only lead of the afternoon with a single through the left side. Kania recorded two RBI's, bringing in Morgan and Mattison Phinney.

The Highlanders caught on fire in the fifth and sixth inning, adding nine runs which proved to be too much for the Lakers.

Oswego added just one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning, which was from a Kania single to the pitcher. Phinney was brought in home for the final run of the ball game.

The Lakers fell by a score of 15-8 in game one. Fiona Higgins recorded four strikeouts in four innings pitched, while Emma Grasso recorded five in three.

Kania led the Lakers in batting, batting a .750 in game one, going three for four with three RBI's.
WHAT'S NEXT
Oswego State will have another double header next week, with a matchup against Hamilton College. Game one is scheduled for 3:30pm on Tuesday, April 4th, and game two is scheduled for 5:30pm.
