Softball Drops Doubleheader In Final Games of Season

CORTLAND, NY – The Oswego State Softball team fell to the Cortland Red Dragons in their doubleheader regular season finale. 

THE BASICS

Final Score: Game One Oswego 1, Cortland 6 ( 7 Inn.)  Game Two Oswego 1, Cortland 9 (6 Inn.)

Location:  Dragon Field, Cortland, NY

Records:  Oswego State (9-27-1, 4-14 SUNYAC), Cortland (23-11, 14-4 SUNYAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • The Lakers scored their only run of the game in the top of the first, when Fiona Higgins hit a home run to right field.

  • Cortland had a three run home run in the bottom of the second inning, and took a 3-1 lead.

  • The Red Dragons also had a two run home run in the bottom of the fifth to go up 5-1. They added an additional run in the bottom of the sixth off an RBI single.

  • Both pitchers, Higgins and Cortland's Karlee Weeden, threw complete games.

Game 2

  • Cortland scored in the bottom of the first, but the Lakers tied the game at one in the top of the second inning, off an Ellie Mahoney RBI single.

  • The Red Dragons took the lead in the bottom of the second inning, going up 2-1.

  • Cortland continued to consistently score throughout the game, starting with two runs in the fourth inning.

  • They added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth, and an additional insurance run in the sixth inning that ended the game.

  • After scoring their lone run in the second inning, Oswego had one hit for the rest of the game, which was a single by Samantha Morgan, who ends the season with a team high .337 batting average and .929 OPS.

The Oswego State softball season has concluded.The SUNYAC playoff teams will start play on Thursday, May 11.
