J.J. O'Connell joined the Laker staff after serving as the Head Volleyball Coach at NCAA Division III Stevens Institute of Technology for ten seasons.  During his tenure with the Ducks, the team made seven straight trips to the NCAA Division III National Championships, including two trips to the national quarterfinals in 2006 and 2007, while accumulating a 272-92 overall record.

In his time as an assistant coach, O'Connell helped Brockport to a pair of SUNYAC West regular season titles and runner-up finishes in the SUNYAC Championship Tournament.  During two seasons at Ferris State, the team was runner-up in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship both years and earned an at-large bid to the 1999 NCAA Division II National Championships.  While at Cortland, he helped the Red Dragons to a pair of SUNYAC Championships and three bids to the NCAA Division III National Championships with a pair of quarterfinal appearances in 1996 and 1997.  O'Connell helped teams to a 245-76 mark as an assistant coach.

O'Connell is a poll voter for the AVCA Division III Women's Volleyball Coaches Poll and previously completed a term as the Chair of the NCAA Women's Volleyball National Committee in 2008 after serving on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee for the New York Region from 2004-08. He has also served on the AVCA Division III Head Coaches Committee, the AVCA All-Region Committee, and was an active official for USA Volleyball from 1994-2011.
