The Oswego State field hockey team put up a solid fight against fourth-ranked Cortland, but the Red Dragons still prevailed picking up a 2-0 victory on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the South Athletic Complex.
The win puts Cortland at 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the SUNY Athletic Conference, while the Lakers fall to 1-6 and 0-1 in the conference.
Cortland also claimed the "Dragon Sword" for the fifth straight year. The sword is presented annually to the winner when Cortland and Oswego State face each other during the regular season.
The Red Dragons netted a goal in each half as Becky Osier (Morrisville) scored 32:19 into the game off of a scramble in front of the Laker net.
Cortland added an insurance goal with less than five minutes remaining in the game as Kelli Johnson (Elma) deflected in a shot originally taken by Jess Seren (Gloversville). The goal was Johnson's fourth in the last two games.
Oswego State goalie Kim Trepasso (Warrensburg) made 15 saves, while Cortland's Jessica Anderson (East Islip) finished with four.
The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 25, hosting conference opponent Oneonta at 1 p.m.
