The Oswego State men's basketball team pulled out a win against Buffalo State by a score of 67-62 at Laker Hall on Saturday, Jan. 15.
Oswego State improved to 12-1 on the year with the win and are now 4-1 in SUNY Athletic Conference play. The Bengals of Buffalo State fell to 7-6 with a 2-3 record against SUNAC foes.
The game opened with tight play as Oswego State could not pull away from the pesky Bengals. Oswego State led at the end of the first half 38-33, never pulling again by more then seven points.
Buffalo State started the second half with a 9-4 run to tie the game at 42 with 15:24 left to play. Oswego State would regain the lead on a jumper by Nicholas Perioli (New Hampton) at 14:44. The Lakers would never relinquish this lead, matching the Bengals with 29 points in the second half.
Lakers junior Ahmad Mims (Syracuse) finished with a game-high 17 points and also led both teams with eight rebounds. Mims went six-for-eight at the charity stripe, nailing three free throws to seal the win in the last 40 seconds of the game. Fellow Laker Mat Burridge (Hannibal) finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Perioli finished with eleven points, four steals and two assists.
Bengal Aaron Carter (Niagara Falls) finished with a team-leading 12 points in the losing effort. Gregg Jones (Syracuse) finished with 11 points for Buffalo State and hit their only three of the day. The Bengals were 1-15 from behind the three-point arc in the game, shooting just 6.7% from three-point land.
Oswego State heads to SUNY Brockport on Tuesday, Jan. 18. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. This is the first of two season meetings between the Lakers and the Golden Eagles.
