Laker ground Golden Eagles, move into tie for first place

The Oswego State women's basketball team gained a share of first place in the SUNY Athletic Conference earning a 61-45 win over visiting Brockport on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Laker Hall.
The Lakers are now tied with the Golden Eagles atop the conference as both teams have 9-2 records in the SUNYAC. Overall, Oswego State is 16-2, while Brockport dropped to 11-8. The Golden Eagles entered the game riding a school record nine-game winning streak.
The Golden Eagles scored the first basket of the game, but the Lakers then took charge scoring the next six points and never relinquishing the lead. Oswego State led by as many as 14 points in the opening 20 minutes before carrying a 33-20 advantage into the break.
The hosts continued to build on the lead in the second half going up by as many as 20 before the final horn sounded.
Kelly Mraz (Johnstown) led Oswego State with 17 points with Lacey Kimpland (Fulton) adding 13 and Sally Shuster (East Amherst) had 12. Shuster was effective from behind the 3-point arc hitting 4-of-7.
For Brockport, Kim Schlegel (Red Creek) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Courtney Hines (Johnstown) chipping in with 12 points for the Golden Eagles. 
The Lakers return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 8, heading to Geneseo to take on the Blue Knights in a 6 p.m. start.
