Oswego State drops contest to conference rival

After returning home with a convincing win over SUNYIT, the Oswego State women's soccer team had momentum going into today's contest against Geneseo. But they ran into a hot defense, with the visitors topping the Lakers 2-0.

The Lakers and Blue Knights battled through the first 32 minutes of play before Geneseo senior Maureen Hilliker (Williamsville NY, Williamsville South) crossed a ball directly to teammate Jackie Fertitta's (Roslyn NY, Herricks) head who then redirected it into the upper-left corner of the net for the first tally of the afternoon. Oswego came firing back several minutes later on a breakaway by junior Maureen Kasperek (Fulton NY, G. Ray Bodley) only to have the ball stuffed by Geneseo keeper Diane Long (Kenmore NJ, Nardin Academy), ending the first half a close 1-0 game.

The action in the second half was much like the first with both teams pressing the other's defensive half of the field.  Geneseo junior Emily Petraglia (Delmar NY, Bethlehem) put an end to the scoring drought at the 60:07 minute mark on a right-footed boot off of a low pass from teammate Melissa Santariello (Fairport NY, Fairport) that went under the outstretched hands of Laker keeper Ashley Distin (Fulton NY, G. Ray Bodley).  This proved to be all the scoring the Blue Knights needed as Oswego was unable to put the ball in the opposing net the remainder of the contest.

The Lakers won't have to wait long to avenge the loss as they play host to another conference rival Brockport Saturday at 1 p.m.
