Early goals lead No. 4 Oswego over No. 7 Hobart

The Oswego State hockey team scored three goals in the first 4:08 and went on to a 5-2 win over Hobart on Saturday at Romney Field House in Oswego.

The Laker offense went to work right away and scored quickly against the visiting Statesmen in a matchup of top-10 teams in the latest national poll.

Freshman Matt Whitehead scored just 1:56 into the game on assists from T.J. Manastersky and John Duco. Ryan Ellis scored the second Oswego State goal at 3:12. Ryan Woodward's goal at 4:08 gave the Lakers a commanding early lead.

Oswego State sophomore goaltender Ryan Scott outdueled Hobart's sensational freshman Keith Longo as Scott made several outstanding saves in the first period to keep the Statesmen off of the board. Scott finished the game with 26 saves and Longo made 28 saves.

After a scoreless second period, Hobart climbed back into the game when Edward Poirier deflected a point shot by Andrew Brennan past Scott.

Woodward answered for the Lakers to re-establish the three-goal advantage. With two goals on the night, Woodward now has 19 goals on the year and leads the nation in goals and points.

Jason Merritt scored for Hobart and Ryan Ellis added an empty-netter for Oswego to seal the win.

Manastersky had three assists and Jocelyn Dubord recorded two assists for Oswego State.

The Lakers, ranked fourth in the latest USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll, are now 13-3-0 on the season. Hobart, ranked seventh, is 9-3-0.
