Lakers start the year with win over Chatham

The Oswego State women's ice hockey team debuted in style, winning its first game of the season 3-1 against the Chatham Cougars on Saturday at the Campus Center Ice Arena.

Jenna Kirkwood was scored the first goal of the season for the Lakers, 5:54 into the first period. Jessica O'Grady earned the assist on the play.

Minutes later, Stephanie Esposito's goal put Oswego up 2-0 and it proved to be the game-winner.

O'Grady would tally the final goal for the Lakers in the third period on a 2-on-1 rush with a wrist shot at the hash marks.

Lakers goaltender Hilary Hitchman had 22 saves, while Chatham?s goaltender, Brenn Scott had 53 saves.

Jennifer Quimby scored the only goal for the Cougars, with a power play goal.

The home-opener victory marked not only the first win for the team in the new Campus Center Ice Arena, but also the first women's ice hockey game since the early 1980s.

The Lakers face the Chatham Cougars again Sunday at 1 p.m.
