Utica pulls away late, defeats Oswego State

Four third-period goals gave the visiting Utica Pioneers a 6-2 win over Oswego State in women's ice hockey action on Wednesday at the Campus Center Ice Arena in Oswego.

Jill Nolan and Mandy Finkle each scored twice in the third period for Utica, as the Pioneers were playing their first game of the season.

Oswego State opened the scoring on Angie Friesen's second goal of the year. It came with 6:33 remaining in the first period and was assisted by Nicole Holman. Friesen's shot in traffic eluded Utica goalie Stephanie Yates.

The Pioneers scored twice late in the first to take a 2-1 lead, with Samantha Rowan and Kelli Vossler lighting the lamp.

Oswego State scored the only goal in the second period as Tiffany Duquette put a long shot through Yates to tie the score. Rachael Esenwein and Stephanie Esposito assisted.

Finkle and Nolan provided the decisive scoring in the third period.

Laker goalie Hilary Hitchman made 37 saves, while Yates had 18 stops for the Pioneers.

Both teams are members of the ECAC Women's West, but it was a non-league game. Oswego State fell to 3-4-1 on the season. The Lakers have some time off, before returning to action on the road at Plymouth State on Dec. 2-3.
