The Oswego State men's basketball team started its season with an exceptional performance offensively and defeated visting Cazenovia 114-60 on Friday night in the second semifinal of the Max Ziel Classic in Oswego. The Lakers will play Lehman College for the tournament title on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
Five Laker players scored in double-figures, led by freshman Mahamoud Jabbi, who had 20 points. He also pulled down 10 rebounds. Dominick White and Kyle Reuter scored 16 points each, and while seniors Erik Roberson (15 points, 8 rebounds) and Mat Burridge (13 points, 10 rebounds) contributed valuable play inside.
The Lakers shot 54 percent from the field, and made 15 of 20 free-throw attempts. Nine Laker players played at least 10 minutes in the game.
Cazenovia was led by Josh Winans, who scored eight points. Steve Zavackis, Jamaal Webster, Erik Sauer, and Joel Hughes scored seven points each.
Lehman 70, Purchase 58
The Lightning struck for 34 points in the second half and pulled away from Purchase in the first semifinal. The game was tied 36-36 at halftime, but Lehman held Purchase to just 22 points in the final 20 minutes and advanced to the title game.
Nick Watson scored 27 points to lead Lehman, while Duane Rhoden had 12 points and 14 rebounds for Lehman. Jason Marchena added 16 points, and made four 3-pointers.
Warren Walters and David Bastar had 22 points each for Purchase.
