Defense dominates for Oswego State

The Oswego State women's basketball team held Potsdam to just 31 points in a 64-31 win on Tuesday night at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium at SUNY Potsdam.

Sophomore Sarah Lombard led the Lakers with 15 points and 17 rebounds. Lombard was the only Oswego State player in double-figures in scoring or rebounding. Junior guard Lindsey Marquit had eight points and four steals. Junior Lacey Kimpland had seven points, and sophomores Samantha Driscoll and Stacy Keeler and junior Jessica Tremblay scored six points each. Junior point guard Kelly Mraz led all players with six assists.

Potsdam scored 19 points in the first half and just 12 in the second half. Kelsey Schoen led the Bears with eight points.

The Lakers had 18 steals in the contest and allowed just 14 field goals. The 31 points allowed marked the stingiest defensive effort of the season for the Lakers. They had previously allowed a low total of 38 points in three games, against Cazenovia on Dec. 8, Fredonia on Jan. 10, and Plattsburgh on Jan. 31.

Oswego State is now 18-5 overall and 13-2 overall. The Lakers wrap up their regular season on Saturday at Brockport, against the team that has given Oswego State one of its two conference losses. The game is at 6 p.m. at Tuttle North Gymnasium at SUNY Brockport.
