Lakers beat Potsdam 9-3

The Oswego State hockey team scored five goals in the second period and cruised to a 9-3 win over Potsdam on Saturday at Romney Field House. It was the final regular season game in the building's history as the home of Laker hockey.

Rick Varone and Ryan Ellis had two goals each. Varone's goals were both scored on breakaways where he deked Potsdam goalie Vince Cuccaro on the forehand side. Varone's second goal, a short-handed marker, came with 8:51 remaining in the second period and gave the Lakers a 5-1 lead. It also chased Cuccaro, who was replaced by Rob Barnhardt for the remainder of the game.

Ryan Woodward, the nation's leading scorer, had a goal and an assist. Tony DiNunzio had three assists for Oswego State playing in just his second game of the season. Ryan Koresky, Francois Gagnon, Trevor Gilligan, and Brendan McLaughlin also scored for the Lakers.

Ryan McCarthy, Adam Gebara, and Corey McAllister scored for Potsdam.

Oswego State seniors Jocelyn Dubord and Bryan Gent were honored during the first intermission. Nearly 100 former players were on hand for the final regular season game at Romney and took part in a second intermission ceremony.

The Lakers are now 17-4-2 overall and lead the SUNYAC with a 9-2-1 conference mark. Potsdam is 7-11-4 on the season and 6-5-1 in the conference.
