The No. 4 Cortland Red Dragons defeated Oswego State 8-0 in a field hockey game at Laker Field on Wednesday, Sept. 20. It was the first SUNYAC game for both teams.
The visitors scored six goals in the first half and cruised to the victory. Beth Edgeworth and Lauren Eichelberger each scored twice for the Red Dragons. Kayla Chambers, Kelli Johnson, Brit Paulus, and Samantha Spehler also scored for Cortland. Christine McCabe had two assists and Kristin Courtney and Kelli Johnson also recorded assists.
Oswego State managed just three shot attempts, and Cortland had 30. Laker goalie Kaitlin Daniels made 11 saves, while Stacy Billings, Morgan Burk, and Nicole Willis combined to post the shutout for the Red Dragons.
Cortland is now 6-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Oswego State fell to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the SUNYAC. The Red Dragons retained the Dragon Sword, annually awarded to the winner of the field hockey game between these two teams.
Oswego State hosts Oneonta Saturday at 1 p.m.
