Lakers beaten at the buzzer

Utica guard Doug Herring hit a 15-foot jump shot with two seconds remaining, and led the host Pioneers to a 63-62 win over Oswego State in men's basketball action on Tuesday night.

The back-and-forth game featured numerous lead changes, including two in the final 10 seconds of the contest. Erik Roberson made two free-throws with 10 seconds left on the clock to give the Lakers a 62-61 lead, but Herring's shot won it for the host Pioneers.

Todd Franze led the Lakers with 19 points, and Kyle Reuter scored 17 points including 12 in the second half. Erik Roberson added 14 points. Mat Burridge had seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

Oswego State is now 9-8 overall, while the Empire 8-leading Pioneers are 13-2 on the season. The Lakers return to SUNYAC play on Friday, when they host Cortland at Max Ziel Gymnasium at 8 p.m.
