The Oswego State women's ice hockey team got its season off to a winning start with a 2-1 victory over Chatham University at Shady Side Academy in suburban Pittsburgh.
After a scoreless first period, Oswego State scored two second-period goals that proved to be enough.
Laker freshman Erica Shapey scored in the first minute of the period on an assist from Jessica Lister. Oswego State extended its lead to 2-0 later in the period as Jenna Kirkwood scored on an assist from Aprilyn Gush.
Oswego State outshot Chatham 41-32 in the game, and Laker goalie Erin Robson made 31 saves, allowing one goal late in the third period. The Lakers killed off a five-minute major penalty that helped preserve the lead.
Oswego State is now 1-0-0 on the season and the same two teams play again on Sunday afternoon.
