New Paltz outduels Oswego State 3-1

The New Paltz Hawks defeated Oswego State 3-1 in a SUNYAC field hockey game on Saturday afternoon at Laker Field in Oswego.

New Paltz is now 4-7 overall and 3-2 in SUNYAC games. Oswego State fell to 1-11 and 1-5 in the conference.

New Paltz freshman Lauren Nicomini scored a pair of goals and assisted on a third as the Hawks built a 3-0 lead in the first half. Nicomini's first goal was shot from close range after a centering pass from Caitlin Ryder in the 16th minute.

Those two players again combined to help the Hawks take a 2-0 lead. After some perimeter passing following a penalty corner, Ryder fed Nicomini at the left post for the goal.

Another corner was awarded in the 22nd minute, and Nicomini shot from 10 yards, and the ball was touched into the net by Kristen Donnelly.

Oswego State's goal came in the 67th minute when Brittany Roetzer fed Lauren Mastriano for a goal. The Lakers outshot the Hawks in the second half and held a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners, but New Paltz goalkeeper Jessica Malone made five saves in the half and six for the game.

Laker goalie Jamie Scharfe had six saves and Sara Budde had a defensive save for the Lakers.

Oswego State plays Wednesday at Wells College.
