NATIONAL CHAMPS!!!

The Oswego State men's ice hockey team defeated Middlebury 4-3 in overtime on Sunday afternoon to capture the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey championship in Superior, Wis. Garren Reisweber scored 12:55 into overtime and the Lakers won their first team championship in any sport.

Reisweber picked up the puck along the right-wing boards after defenseman Ryan Koresky dove to push the puck out of the Laker zone. Reisweber's speedy rush beat a Middlebury defenseman and he deked around a pokecheck attempt from goalie Ross Cherry before sliding the puck into the vacated net.

After a scoreless first period, the Lakers took a 1-0 lead in the opening minute of the second when Reisweber scored a power-play goal on an assist from Peter Magagna. Middlebury then went ahead 2-1 with a pair of goals in a span of 1:12. The go-ahead goal was on a 5-on-3 power play tally by John Sales.

The Lakers tied it with 3:48 left in the second period as Trevor Gilligan scored on a slapper from the left wing boards.

Magagna scored a power-play goal for the Lakers early in the third period to put Oswego State ahead for the second time in the game. Oswego State went 2-for-4 on the power play against a Middlebury team that entered the game ranked fifth nationally in penalty-killing percentage and is the second-least penalized team in the nation.

Middlebury tied the score with 2:55 remaining as John Sullivan scored after picking up a loose puck that deflected into free space near the front of the net.

Reisweber's goal came at 12:55 of the overtime period.

Goalie Ryan Scott made 47 saves in the game to set an NCAA Division III Championship game record, and his 19 saves in the first period tied the championship game record, held by two other players.

Oswego State finished the season 23-3-3 and dethroned the three-time defending national champions from Middlebury, who finished the year 20-8-3.
