The Oswego State men's basketball team made a school-record 17 3-pointers in the game, and defeated SUNYIT 91-84 on Friday night in an ECAC Upstate Tournament semifinal game at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie.
Three Oswego State players scored 20 or more points, led by Tom Downing with 22. Erik Roberson and Kyle Reuter added 21 points each for the Lakers. That trio combined to make 16 of the team's 3-pointers, with Downing connecting seven times from behind the arc. Reuter made five treys and Roberson had four. Todd Franze had the other 3-pointer for the Lakers and finished the game with nine points and nine rebounds.
Mat Burridge also had nine rebounds, and scored eight points.
The Lakers trailed 44-43 at halftime, but outscored the Wildcats by eight points in the second half for the victory. Oswego State improved to 17-12 on the season.
Oswego State will play for the ECAC Upstate Tournament championship for the third consecutive year. They won the title in 2005 and lost to Ithaca in last year's championship. Oswego State will take on the host and top-seeded Vassar Brewers on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Lakers' 3-point record broke a record that stood for eight and a half seasons, when Oswego State made 14 threes against SUNYIT (then called Utica/Rome) on Dec. 1, 1998.
