Oswego State gets third-straight victory with win over Potsdam

The Oswego State women's soccer team defeated Potsdam 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Laker Field in Oswego.

The Lakers have now won three consecutive games to improve their record to 3-4-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the SUNYAC. Potsdam fell to 7-3-0 on the season and 2-2-0 in conference play.

Oswego State opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Julie McCloskey crossed a ball from the right side and Rachel Maul directed a perfectly-placed header inside of the left post. It was the first collegiate goal for Maul, a freshman from Macedon.

The Lakers had a stellar opportunity to increase their lead in the second half as Mogan Vrydagh's header was blocked by the defense and Maul's shot on the rebound was saved by Potsdam goalkeeper Sarah Casey. Casey finished the game with seven saves.

Potsdam's best chance to tie the score came with under three minutes remaining when the team's leading scorer, Lacey Malbeuf, dribbled in against the Oswego State defense, but her shot went wide to the left of the net. Laker goalkeeper Toby Klein had two saves.

Oswego State sealed the victory with a goal with just 1:04 remaining in the game. McCloskey crossed from the right again and Tricia Sullivan scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season. McCloskey's two assists in the game gave her three on the season and she is the team leader in that category.

The game was delayed for 40 minutes during the first half due to lightning.

The Lakers host Plattsburgh at 1 p.m. Saturday at Laker Field.
