The Elmira Soaring Eagles got a first-half goal from Deanna Henson and held on for a 1-0 victory over Oswego State in a field hockey game played Wednesday afternoon at Laker Field in Oswego.
The Lakers had a 16-7 shot advantage in the game, and outshot Elmira 7-4 in the second half, but narrowly missed scoring the tying goal on several occasions near the front of the net. Elmira goalie Jalene McCulloch made seven saves and earned the shutout.
The Soaring Eagles are now 1-0 on the season, and Oswego State fell to 0-3.
Oswego State had an early opportunity to take the lead just 18 minutes into the first half on a nice build-up through Brittany Roetzer, Lauren Mastriano, and Hannah Chevalier but failed to convert the goal from close range.
Elmira went ahead when Jennifer Heydt carried the ball up the left wing side and sent a pass across the net mouth that was re-directed home by Henson. That was the only scoring in the match.
The Lakers will play at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. against William Smith.
