The Oswego State women's ice hockey team scored two first-period goals and went on to a 3-1 victory over Chatham in an ECAC Women's West hockey game Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center Ice Arena in Oswego.
The Lakers scored just 34 seconds into the game as Jessica Lister shot home a centering pass from Erica Shapey. Natalie Rossi also picked up an assist on the play.
Oswego State added to its lead later in the first period as freshman defenseman Brenna Weber wristed a shot from the left point through traffic and past Chatham goalie Brenn Scott for a goal. It was the first goal of Weber's collegiate career, and was assisted by Lister.
Chatham scored the only goal of the second period on a 4-on-3 power play as April Govednik tallied unassisted.
The Lakers preserved a 2-1 lead and killed off a five-minute major penalty assessed against them early in the third period, and then added an insurance goal as Annie Hirschkorn banged in a loose puck at the edge of the crease with 8:27 left in the third period.
Oswego State goalie Hilary Hitchman earned the victory and made 26 saves, several of which came during Chatham's 10 power-play opportunities in the contest. Chatham goalie Brenn Scott had 39 saves.
The Lakers are now 5-9-1 overall and 1-6-0 in the ECAC Women's West, while Chatham fell to 0-16-0 overall and 0-9-0 in the ECAC Women's West. The same two teams meet again on Sunday at the Campus Center Ice Arena at 3 p.m. The Lakers will host an open skate following Sunday's game. Skate rental and participation are free.
