The Chatham Cougars built an early lead and went on to a 4-3 victory over the Oswego State women's ice hockey team on Sunday afternoon at the Campus Center Ice Arena.
The Cougars scored three first-period goals and again in the first minute of the second period to take a 4-1 lead. Erika Derr opened the scoring 4:06 into the game on an assist from April Govednik and Lauren Fishman added an unassisted goal five minutes later to put Chatham in front 2-0.
Oswego State got on the board with a goal by Ashley Meyers assisted by Brenna Weber and Jessica Lister, but Govednik scored on a point shot with 2:09 left in the first period to re-establish Chatham's two-goal lead.
Jennifer Quimby scored on a breakaway with a shot over the shoulder of Oswego State goalie Emi Williams 38 seconds into the middle period to make the score 4-1. The Lakers took a timeout and Williams was replaced by Hilary Hitchman.
Oswego State controlled play in the third period, outshooting Chatham 19-4 and Kendall Hanley scored a pretty goal with 8:57 left in the third period, weaving through the Cougars and sliding a backhand between the pads of Chatham goalie Brenn Scott. Oswego State pulled to within one with 3:08 left on Gillian Toneguzzo's first goal of the year. They pulled the goalie and pressed for the tying goal, but came up short and Chatham held on for its first victory of the season and first ever in ECAC Women's West play.
Williams made 12 saves for the Lakers and Hitchman stopped 13 shots. Chatham's Brenn Scott had 35 saves in the game.
Oswego State is now 5-10-1 overall and 1-7-0 in the ECAC Women's West, while Chatham is 1-16-0 and 1-9-0 in the league. The Lakers return to action on Sunday at Castleton State.
