Oswego yields late goals in 2-1 overtime loss at Fredonia

The Oswego State women's soccer team held a one goal lead with less than ten minutes remaining in the second half, but host Fredonia (8-4-0, 2-3-0 SUNYAC) scored the tying goal to send the game to overtime, then won it a minute into the extra session to come away with a 2-1 triumph over the Lakers.

It was the second straight game where Oswego (5-5-1, 1-3-1 SUNYAC) was a victim of late game heroics. They dropped a 2-1 decision to Plattsburgh State on the road the previous weekend.

After a scoreless first half, The Lakers jumped on the board first when junior Julie McCloskey (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) headed in a corner kick from classmate Tricia Sullivan (Copenhagen) at the 58:14 mark. Despite being outshot for most of the game (Fredonia held a 21-9 advantage), the Oswego defense thwarted several Blue Devil attempts until the 81:36 mark, when Laura Hartung scored off of a deflection of a corner kick to even the score.

The corner kick did in the Lakers in the opening minute of the first sudden death overtime period, when Gwen Curtis' corner kick directly sailed past sophomore goalkeeper Toby Klein (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) 1:05 into the period.

Klein finished with eight saves, while Fredonia goalie Becky Scroger stopped four shots at goal.

Oswego continues its Western New York road swing with a 4 p.m. conference match with Buffalo State College.
