RUTLAND, VT - Oswego State raced out to a 2-0 lead through the first two periods and skated to a 4-1 win over Saint Michael's College in the opening round of the Rutland Herald Invitational at the Rutland Regional Fieldhouse.
The Lakers received single goals from four different players including 2007-08 leading scorer, Jessica Lister (Aurora, ONT) who also added a pair of assists, in earning the win and improving to 1-0-0 on the season. Captain Jenna Kirkwood (Chilliwack, BC) opened the scoring for Oswego notching her first goal of the season on the power-play 2:54 into the first period. Kirkwood scored from just outside the crease off a Angie Friesen (Chilliwack, BC) assist. Oswego made it 2-0 12:29 into the second period on a goal from Stephanie Esposito (Parish, NY), her first of the season, assisted by Lister and Erica Shapey (Plainview, NY).
Saint Michael's cut the lead in half 5:24 into the third period as Desiree Biron scored on assists from Molly DiMasi and Kaleigh Ferrari. Biron beat a defender and stuffed the puck into the upper right corner of the net for her first of the season.
Oswego tacked on a pair of insurance goals to put the game out of reach as Lister and Krista Pattemore (Athens, ONT) each tallied after the 10-minute mark.
Melanie Cullen took the loss for Saint Michael's in goal, stopping 36 shots. Erin Robinson (Orillia, ONT) earned the win with 28 saves for Oswego, who will battle first-year program SUNY Potsdam for the inaugural title at 3:00 pm in a match-up of ECAC West opponents.
