Lakers dominating in 116-68 season opening win over SUNY Canton

Freshman forward Chad Burridge (Hannibal) was one of five players in double figures for the Oswego State men's basketball team, scoring a game-high 24 points in leading the Lakers to a convincing 116-68 victory over NAIA SUNY Canton in its 2008-09 season opener at Max Ziel Gymnasium.

The Lakers (1-0), who never trailed throughout the game, jumped out to a 59-31 halftime lead, with Burridge scoring 18 of his points in the half. Junior forward Stanley Francois (Valley Cottage) scored 19 points, followed by seniors Kyle Reuter (Mexico), Tommy Downing (Staten Island), and freshman Conor Monaghan (Brooklyn) with 14 points each. All 12 players on the Oswego roster scored points in the game.

Junior forward Silvon John (Bronx) was the top scorer for the Kangaroos (0-2) with 17 points, hitting seven of 10 shots from the free-throw line (5-for-8 in the second half). Classmate guard Antonio Valentin (Watertown) followed with 14 points, while freshman Lowell Stevens added 11 points.

The Lakers will host Cazenovia College in a non-league contest on Wednesday Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. While the standard admission charge ($4 for adults, $3 faculty/staff, $1 students) will be waived for this contest, spectators are asked to make a donation instead on behalf of 19-year-old SUNY Oswego student Angel Moreno, who was viciously attacked nearly a week ago in downtown Oswego. Moreno was scheduled to be a student manager this season on the Laker men's basketball team.
