Oswego surrenders nine-point halftime lead in 68-61 loss to Hamilton

Freshman forward Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke, NY/Hoosick Valley) scored a team leading 17 points, connecting on seven of 11 free throws, while junior Rachel Kohrs (New Lebanon) and senior Heather Merino (Queensbury/Lake George) tallied 11 points apiece, but Oswego State could not build upon a nine-point halftime lead as host Hamilton College shot 86.7 percent (13 of 15) from the free-throw line in the second half and 85.7 percent for the game, while getting a game-high 22 points from senior Sydney Fasulo en route to a 68-61 win over the Lakers in a non-conference contest on Friday, Dec. 12 at Hamilton.

Kohrs, who hit 4-for-5 from three point range, led all scorers in the first half with 11 points, making three of five 3-pointers, while Ryan followed with 10 points, pulling down nine of her team-leading nine rebounds in the half, as the Lakers led for the entire opening half, taking a 31-22 lead into the locker room.

Fasulo scored 12 points in the second half, connecting on all eight free-throw attempts, while classmate Laura Wetmore tallied nine of her 14 points in the half as the Continentals (5-2) slowly cut into Oswego's 31-22 halftime lead in the opening 7:22 of the second half, taking their first lead of the game, 42-41, on a jumper with 12:38 to play in the half.

There were seven lead changes and three ties over a three-minute stretch before Hamilton took the lead to stay (51-49) on a layup with 9:28 remaining, starting a 6-0 run in opening up an eight-point lead.  The Lakers would pull to within three points on two occasions, the last coming on a three-pointer by sophomore Traci Bacon (Massena) with 2:39 to play to cut the lead to 62-59.  Bacon, the lone player on either team to play all 40 minutes, contributed eight points, four steals, three assists, and a blocked shot.

Hamilton finished the game on  6-2 run to secure the win, with Fasulo scoring four points on a layup and a pair of free throws, and Wetmore hitting a pair from the line with 19 seconds remaining.

The Lakers wrap up the fall-semester schedule on Saturday with a 4 p.m. non-conference game at Farmingdale State.
