Lakers drop SUNYAC opener at the buzzer to Geneseo 85-84

Senior guard Tommy Downing (Staten Island/Curtis) scored a team-leading 26 points, scoring on a layup with three seconds remaining in the game to give Oswego State a one-point lead, but host SUNY Geneseo threw the inbounds pass the length of the court, missing the layup but scoring on the rebound with a no-look, over-the-shoulder lob from leading scorer Scott Morton to come away with an 85-84 lead over the Lakers on Tuesday, Dec. 2 in the SUNYAC opener for both teams.

Downing, who finished shooting 44 percent (11 of 25) from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers, and dished out a game-high seven assists,  was one of three starters in double digits for Oswego State (4-1 overall, 0-1 SUNYAC).  Senior guard Kyle Reuter (Mexico) followed with 20 points, connecting on eight of 15 shots from the floor, going 3-for-5 from behind the arc, and junior Stanley Francois (Valley Cottage) registered a "double-double" with 15 points (5-for-7 shooting from the floor, making five of eight free throws), and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Morton, who picked up his fourth foul 28 seconds into the second half and played only 24 minutes for the game, finished with 32 points, hitting 10 of 13 shots from the field with a pair of three-pointers, hit 10 of 12 free throws and made four steals. He was one of four players in double digits for the Blue Kinghts (4-1, 1-0 SUNYAC), who lost twice to the Lakers during the 2007-08 season.

Geneseo shot 55 percent (33-for-60) from the field and 55-6 percent (5-for-9) from the three-point line, while Oswego was limited to 42.3 percent shooting (22 of 78) from the floor, incluging 35.9 percent in the first half, and nine of 28 shooting from the arc.
